What do you need to know about South Africa's new marijuana laws?

1. WHAT DOES THE NEW MARIJUANA LAW IN SOUTH AFRICA MEAN FOR THE WORKPLACE?

• The employer needs to embed the issue within their organisational disciplinary code.
• The possession and cultivation of cannabis at the workplace should expressly not be permitted.
• The use of cannabis (and other drugs) at the workplace should be prohibited by the employer.
• The basis of the prohibition would be that the workplace is a public space (Not Private)
• Most employers already have policies in place that deal with alcohol and drug abuse.

2. HOW LONG DOES MARIJUANA STAY IN YOUR SYSTEM

• URINE TESTING;
Occasional users (up to three times a week): 3 days
Moderate users (four times a week): 5 to 7 days
Chronic users (daily): 10 to 15 days
Chronic heavy users (multiple times a day): more than 30 days

• BLOOD TESTING;
Occasional users (up to three times a week): 3 days
Moderate users (four times a week): 5 to 7 days
Chronic users (daily): 10 to 15 days
Chronic heavy users (multiple times a day): more than 30 days

• SALIVA TESTING;
Occasional users: 1 to 3 days
Chronic users: 1 to 29 days

• HAIR TESTING;
Hair follicle tests assess drug use for up to 90 days. After use, amounts remain in the hair

3. LONG TERM EFFECTS OF MARIJUANA

• Targets brain and Disrupts normal brain development and function
• Altered perceptions and mood
• Impaired coordination, Difficulty thinking and problem solving
• Can have permanent detrimental effects on thinking/memory in a young developing brain

4. HEALTH EFFECTS 

• Smoke irritates lungs and Increase heart rate by 20-100 percent after smoking
• Increase risk of heart attack
• Hallucinations and paranoia
• Respiratory problems and Possibly increases risk for lung cancer

5. MARIJUANA AND ADDICTION

About 9 percent of users are addicted
Withdrawal systems – irritability, sleeplessness, decreased appetite, anxiety and drug craving

No medication available for withdrawal symptom.
