Africa Lawn’s – Irrigation and Your Lawn

The right procedures for soil preparation, establishing and maintenance of our lawns will determine the success and satisfactory look of your grass and lawn. There are various processes one must adhere to, to make sure of success. Below we present a few lawn maintenance tips to get your grass growing.

YOUR GRASS NEEDS MORE TLC THAN YOU REALIZE

Water is one of the key factors influencing the growth of turfgrass, too much water and your lawn has a higher chance of catching diseases but then again too little water… and your grass will die of thirst.

Never sit back and rely on your irrigation system to follow the correct steps of watering and do the work for you, your pipes may get blocked, leak or they may break, anything can happen when you are least aware of it.

The best way to ensure your lawn is moist enough is to walk the lawn and you be the judge. Due to there being so many different types of grass and the wheater conditions changing on a daily basis, your grass need different amounts of water.

Well hopefully you just realized if the grass is greener on the other side of the fence it's because you're grass gets either too much or too little TLC.

Watering all depends on the season, like they say there's always a reason for the season.

Cool season grasses, such as our Corporate Green, are obviously adapted to cooler climatic conditions, so therefore in the summer times these types of grass require some type of irrigation system. Cooling the grass during the hottest time of the day would take some of the intense heat off of the grass, another indication that your grass needs water is when the leaves show a blue-green colour.

BEST WAY TO ENSURE YOUR LAWN IS MOIST ENOUGH IS TO WALK THE LAWN AND YOU BE THE JUDGE.

Warm season grasses, which include:

This grass is exposed to drought more often therefore for an extended period the grass will go dormant, however when these types of grasses receive water again the grass will start to grow again, just make sure the water isn't withheld for too long.

Always be sure to water the soil only till moist, not soaking wet.

Especially during to the germination phase, seeds will not germinate in wet or dry conditions. Therefore, puddle formation should be avoided completely, this may lead to the seeds being washed away.

Africa Lawns would like to stress the responsible use of water on your lawn due to the current water crisis in South Africa.
