Nine SALI awards for Trees South Africa
Mature tree specialists, Trees South Africa grow, plant, rescue, relocate and rehabilitate trees.
Owner and founder, Dag Willems, an ecologist and arborist offers his professional consultation services to various organisations, including the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Town City Council and a number of universities.
Relocation of oak trees by Trees South Africa
Trees South Africa received at total of nine awards at the 2019 SALI Awards of Excellence.
Two projects received bronze awards, three received silver awards and four projects, all in the category of Specialised Landscape Construction, received prestigious gold awards.

Gold award-winning projects
Mature English oak relocated
A client approached Trees SA with the request to move a large English oak (Ouercus rubor) eight metres away from its original placement.
At the time of the relocation, the size of the tree was 12m in height, with a trunk diameter of 40cm and 10m wide crown.
A light thinning of the crown was required before the two crane trucks were used to move the tree to its new location.
Careful monitoring of the tree monthly for 12 months ensured its survival. Read more…

Stellenbosch historical tree rescue
The Stellenbosch Municipality requested that mature oaks trees be rescued and removed to make way for road works on Adam Tas road. After assessing the viability for the relocation, it was found that a direct relocation was possible.
A new position outside the Post Office was identified and a total of 16 trees were relocated.
Trees SA designed and installed custom staking to keep the trees upright and protect them from pedestrians. Some 14 years after the relocation, the trees are still thriving. Read more…
Sixteen mature oak trees were relocated in Stellenbosch.
Tokara swamp cypress rescue
A tall, feature tree was requested for Tokara Wine Estate to match the scale of the current buildings and provide an old garden feeling. Trees SA suggested a swamp cypress (Taxodium distichum) that had been recused from another site two years prior and rehabilitated in their nursery.
The rehabilitation process requires constant care and supervision to ensure survival. The tree was installed at Tokara and within four years, declared as established in its new environment.
The tree is now 20m tall and has a crown width of 10m. Read more…

Mature coral tree rescue
A feature tree was required for the new Tramways Building in Woodstock, Cape Town. In 2011, Trees SA rescued a mature coral tree in Stellenbosch and rehabilitated the tree in their nursery for 31 months.
This tree was identified as the perfect tree for the Tramways project. In 2013, the tree was transported and planted in Woodstock.
Despite a number of challenges and the use of three cranes to hoist the tree over a six-story building, the tree was installed in its new position. It was monitored for four years post installation.
In 2018, the tree was deemed established its new environment and the relocation considered successful. Read more…
