The South African Landscapers’ Institute (SALI) has released three manuals on Landscaping Standards for Maintenance, Construction and Interior Plantscaping
- Handbook for Interior Plantscaping
- Landscape Standards for Construction
- Landscape Standards for Maintenance
Â
Developed exclusively for SALI members, all three manuals contain valuable information for property owners, landscapers, growers, government officials, garden services, architects and landscape architects.
Handbook for Interior Plantscaping
Most of the materials and products used in the indoor plantscaping environment are organic elements present either on-site where the installation and/or maintenance will take place, or they are produced by the management of organic components.
Through the mere nature of these products and materials variations arise. This document strives to standardize and provide guidelines, as far as possible, the acceptable, recognizable levels of quality for the indoor plantscapes.
Handling of these living materials and products must be done with a full understanding of their vital nature.
Mishandling and mismanagement can destroy the structure of the growing that has been built up over centuries through natural processes or by combining suitable growing materials; a lapse in providing for the needs of plants can cause irreparable damage. Recognition of these factors is integral in ensuring successful indoor plantscapes.
Landscape Standards for Construction
The construction and maintenance of landscapes is widely practiced across South Africa in both a formal and informal manner. More formal practices arise within the public and private sector in commercial and residential developments within the urban fabric.
These landscapes range from a simple residential garden to highly technical installations of green infrastructure, on roof tops and green walls.
The practices pertaining to the landscape industry are of such a nature that it lends itself to many small start-up businesses that mostly address landscape maintenance of gardens in cities and towns throughout South Africa.
The landscape maintenance industry stretches across a host of activities that include, but are not limited to the maintenance associated with hard and soft landscaping aspects, irrigation, waste management and integrated pest control.
The purpose of this document is therefore to set out standards that find a balance between the highly sophisticated landscapes that strive towards excellence versus low budget type landscapes where the focus is simply greening.
Furthermore, sustainability and resilience has also been considered and integrated where possible in these proposed standards as the shift towards sustainable and resilient landscapes is gaining momentum.
